‘Good news’ for women diagnosed with breast cancer!

This condition is a concern for every woman as more than 2000 of us are diagnosed with breast cancer in Singapore every year.  However, there is ‘good news’.

MORE THAN 80% OF WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER DO NOT NEED TO HAVE A MASTECTOMY (total breast removal), AS PART OF TREATMENT!

This may sound surprising as traditionally, many women have undergone a mastectomy (total removal of the breast) for breast cancer.  The good news is that in more than 80% of cases, this is not the ideal surgical treatment approach.  Only the affected part of the breast with a margin of normal tissue all around needs to be removed.  The rest of the breast can be preserved and is treated with radiotherapy.  This procedure is known as BREAST CONSERVATION TREATMENT (BCT), and is the optimum treatment in the majority of cases, for invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma.  It is appropriate treatment for non-invasive disease, also known as DCIS. (Ductal carcinoma in situ)
